Import a board from Trello or a CSV file

GuideUpdated

On this page

Kanroo reads three kinds of files:

  • CSV: one task per row, from a spreadsheet or another tool such as Jira, Asana, GitHub, or monday.com.
  • Trello JSON: the board export from Trello (Board menu › Print, export, and share › Export as JSON).
  • Kanroo JSON: a board you exported from Kanroo.

Each import creates a new board. Nothing is created before you confirm the preview.

Choose the file

Import the CSV file office-move.csv
  1. Open Boards and choose Import at the top, or press Shift+I.
  2. Pick the Source format (box 1).
  3. For CSV, enter the Board name (box 2). A JSON file brings its own name.
  4. Choose file (box 3). CSV files can have up to 10 MiB and 5,000 rows, JSON files up to 25 MiB.
  5. Choose Map columns (box 4) for CSV. For JSON, Kanroo goes straight to the preview.

Map the CSV columns

Kanroo suggests a column for each field
  1. Kanroo suggests a column for each field and shows sample values below it. Only the Task title (box 1) is required.
  2. Task list (box 2) puts each task into a list by the value in that column. Rows without a value go to the Default list further down (“Imported”).
  3. Task labels (box 3) splits the cell into several labels by the separator you choose.
  4. Priority and due date are optional. Choose Upload and review (box 4).

Review and confirm

The preview counts one board, three lists, six tasks, and five labels
  1. Check the counts (box 1) and the warnings. A warning names data that Kanroo skips. An error must be fixed in the file first.
  2. Cancel import (box 2) throws the preview away.
  3. Confirm import (box 3) creates the board.

What is imported

Source Imported Not imported
CSV Title, list, description, labels, priority, due date Comments, checklists, attachments, assignees, custom fields
Trello Lists, open cards with description and due date, labels, checklists Members, comments, attachments, archived cards and lists, Power-Ups
Kanroo JSON Lists with colors, labels, tasks with checklists, archived tasks, repeat rules People, comments, attachments, WIP limits, the done list

Tips

  • Priorities understand common words: medium is Normal, critical or P0 is Urgent, minor is Low. Unknown values become Normal.
  • Use dates like 2026-10-23. Other date formats are skipped with a warning.
  • An import notifies nobody and assigns nobody. Add people after the import.
  • Imported tasks get new keys. After a Kanroo JSON import, set the done list again, so repeat rules work.
  • A preview that you do not confirm expires after 24 hours.
