Our commitment: Released Core source stays AGPL-3.0-only. Released Core features do not move behind the Enterprise boundary.

Written down in CONTRIBUTING.md

And Kanroo Cloud? Kanroo Cloud is not a third edition. It is the service we run for you in the EU: we host it, and every Enterprise feature is included on every plan.

Self-hosting

Run the core on your own server

One Docker Compose file starts Caddy, the app, a worker, PostgreSQL and the migrations. You need a server with Docker and an SMTP account.

  1. Get the code

Clone the repository. The Compose file and its template live in deploy/. Create your configuration from the template.

    Terminal
    git clone https://github.com/kanrooHQ/kanroo.git
    cd kanroo/deploy
    cp .env.example .env
  2. Write your environment file

Replace every random placeholder in .env with a secret. Then set the release image (KANROO_IMAGE), your domain (APP_DOMAIN), the sender address (MAIL_FROM) and SMTP. SMTP is required, because sign-in uses email codes.

    Terminal
    perl -pi -e 's/replace-with-a-random-\S+/qx(openssl rand -hex 32) =~ s|\s||gr/e' .env
  3. Start the stack

Start PostgreSQL, set up its roles, run the migrations, then start the app, the worker and Caddy. Caddy gets the TLS certificate for your domain.

    Terminal
docker compose up -d --wait postgres
    sh postgres/provision.sh
    docker compose run --rm kanroo-migrate
    docker compose up -d
  4. Then open your domain and sign in with the code we email you.

License

Why AGPL-3.0

We chose a license that keeps the core open for everyone.

  • Improvements stay open

Anyone who offers a changed Kanroo core as a network service must share the source of those changes with its users.

  • Your team can always run it

Run Kanroo for your own organization at no cost and without plan limits. No license key, no seat count.

  • A real open-source license

The Open Source Initiative approves AGPL-3.0. It is not a source-available or fair-use license with extra conditions.

Community

Contributions, trademarks and the Enterprise Edition

  • Contributions are open

Issues and pull requests to Kanroo Core are welcome. Open an issue before larger work, so we agree on the direction first. On your first pull request you sign the Contributor License Agreement once, and you keep the copyright in your work.

    Read CONTRIBUTING.md
  • The name and the mascot

The name Kanroo and the brand assets, the mascot included, are owned by TECHPOINT. They are not covered by the AGPL. Forks are welcome under another name and with their own logo.

    Read TRADEMARKS.md
  • Enterprise Edition for self-hosters

Run SSO, webhooks, the audit log and live updates on your own servers. For businesses, priced on request, with a 14-day free evaluation. The Enterprise Edition is not open source.
