Trello is a fine Kanban tool. But it belongs to Atlassian, a US company, and runs on AWS. Atlassian’s own data residency page does not offer EU data residency for Trello. For many European teams, that is the reason to look elsewhere.
This post lists six Kanban tools that host in Europe. We make one of them, Kanroo, so we are not neutral. To keep it fair, every fact below comes from the vendor’s own pages, checked on 13 October 2026. Prices change. Check the linked pages before you decide.
What “hosted in the EU” should mean
“Hosted in Germany” on a landing page is a start. It is not the whole answer. Ask five questions:
- Where do the servers run? The data center and the country.
- Who are the sub-processors? A data processing agreement (DPA) should list every company that touches your data. A public list is better than a list on request.
- Who owns the company? A European company is easier to hold to European law.
- Can you leave? Look for full export, and for open source if you want to run it yourself.
- What does each plan include? Some tools sell single sign-on (SSO), more views or more history only on higher plans.
A sixth question is personal: does the tool fit how your team works? No table answers that. A free plan or a trial does.
The short list
| Tool | Company | Where it runs | Free hosted plan | Open source |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Wodo | Wodoco B.V., Netherlands | OVHcloud (France), EU region by default | First member free | No |
| PLANKA | PLANKA Software GmbH, Germany | Pro hosted “in Germany” | No, 30-day Pro trial | Source-available |
| Kaneo | Open-source project | Hetzner, Germany and Finland | No, 14-day trial | MIT |

Kanroo
Kanroo is Kanban boards with a built-in wiki. Workspace data on Kanroo Cloud is hosted and processed in the EU: servers in Germany, files in the Netherlands, email from France. The data processing agreement names two sub-processors, netcup and Scaleway. Both are European. Payments for paid plans run through Polar, a US company, as merchant of record. We say this because it matters to some buyers.
What stands out:
- Every feature on every Kanroo Cloud plan. SSO, the wiki, public boards, forms, the API, webhooks and the MCP server are on the Free plan too. Plans differ only in limits, such as members and wiki pages.
- An open-source core. The core is AGPL-3.0. You can run it on your own servers without plan limits.
- A wiki next to the board. Pages link to tasks and tasks link to pages.
- Four board views. Board, swimlanes, calendar and table.
Where Kanroo is weaker today: there is no timeline or Gantt view, no custom fields, no subtasks and no offline mode. These may come with community interest. You can request them through our feedback form.
The Free plan is for one person, with no time limit. A team needs the Team plan. See pricing.
MeisterTask
MeisterTask is made by MeisterLabs in Vaterstetten, near Munich. It says it is “hosted in Germany”, in a data center with BSI C5 and SOC 2 certificates, and it holds ISO 27001:2022.
What stands out:
- A polished Kanban board with Notes built in.
- Viewer seats are free on every plan.
- An official MCP server for Claude, and built-in AI with monthly credits.
Things to check: we found no public sub-processor list. The website privacy policy names Google Analytics, with data on US servers. API access, integrations and automations start at the Pro plan. Timeline, subtasks and custom fields start at Business. SSO is on Enterprise. Details: Kanroo vs MeisterTask.
Wodo
Wodo, from Amsterdam, is the tool closest to Kanroo’s own ideas. Every sub-processor is European: OVHcloud, bunny.net, Lettermint and Mollie. It has no built-in AI and supports MCP with your own assistant. Every feature is on every plan, and the first member is free.
What stands out:
- Price. €6 per member per month at the time of checking, billed monthly. That is less per seat than Kanroo.
- Views. Board, timeline (Gantt), table and matrix.
- Offline-first. It keeps working without a connection.
Things to check: Wodo is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. Docs are linked to items, but there is no standalone wiki.
PLANKA
PLANKA comes from PLANKA Software GmbH in Germany. You can run the Community edition yourself, or buy PLANKA Pro, hosted in Germany on a dedicated instance with an isolated database.
What stands out:
- A mature project, around since 2019. PLANKA counts more than 8.1 million Docker pulls.
- Real-time updates, custom fields, a REST API and webhooks in the Community edition.
- More than 35 languages.
Things to check: the license changed in 2025. PLANKA is now source-available under the PLANKA Community License with a fair-use clause. Before 2023 it was MIT, and until May 2025 it was AGPL-3.0. SSO, calendar and timeline views, templates and recurring cards are in Pro. Pro hosted needs at least 5 users, and there is no wiki. Details: Kanroo vs PLANKA.
Kaneo
Kaneo is MIT-licensed and moves fast. Its cloud runs on Hetzner servers in Germany and Finland.
What stands out:
- One open-source edition. SSO is included when you self-host.
- Board, list, calendar and Gantt views, plus subtasks, dependencies, custom fields and time tracking.
- Two-way sync with GitHub, GitLab and Gitea, and an official MCP server.
Things to check: the privacy policy names sub-processors that include Cloudflare, Amazon SES and Sentry. There is no free cloud plan, only a 14-day trial. Kaneo states that it has no documents or wiki. Details: Kanroo vs Kaneo.
Kanbanq
Kanbanq is a small Kanban tool from Warsaw, Poland, still in open alpha.
What stands out:
- A free plan with unlimited users and up to 250 active tasks.
- Pro at €4.50 per user per month, billed monthly, at the time of checking.
- Public boards, chat and MCP connections.
Things to check: the site does not name its hosting provider. Its privacy policy allows transfers outside the EEA under standard contractual clauses. There is no wiki and we found no import or export.
How to choose
Start from what you cannot give up.
- You must self-host, with a real open-source license: Kanroo (AGPL-3.0) or Kaneo (MIT). PLANKA is self-hostable, but under a fair-use license.
- Every sub-processor must be European: Kanroo and Wodo publish such a list. Read the DPA of any tool you shortlist.
- You need a timeline or Gantt view today: Wodo or Kaneo, or MeisterTask on Business.
- Your board needs a wiki next to it: Kanroo has one built in. MeisterTask has Notes.
- Lowest price for a team: compare the vendors’ pricing pages for your team size. Wodo and Kanbanq are cheaper per seat than Kanroo.
- Free viewers for a large audience: MeisterTask has free viewer seats. Kanroo has public boards: read-only pages that you can share with anyone.
Then try your top two with a real project for a week. A week of real work shows more than any feature list.
Moving from Trello
Kanroo imports Trello’s JSON export. Lists, tasks, labels and checklists come along. Comments and attachments do not. CSV import with column mapping covers other tools. Each import shows a preview first, so nothing changes until you confirm. Read more in import and export.
